Excessive gestational weight gain (EGWG) [i.e., weight gain exceeding the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendations] occurs in 50% of U.S. pregnant women.1 More than 6 million women in the U.S. become pregnant each year and the average GWG has been increasing exponentially over the last three decades.2 From 1990-2014 there was a 35% increase in the number of pregnant women with GWG ¿40lbs (16% to 21.8%).3 Based on pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), the IOM recommends four healthy GWG ranges (see Table 1)
