Montaigne, writing in the sixteenth century Of Books, warned his readers that The only good histories are those that have been written by the persons themselves who commanded in the affairs whereof they write, or who have participated in the conduct of them, or, at least, who have had the conduct of others of the same nature. Such are almost all the Greek and Roman historians, for several eye-witnesses having writ of the same sub ject (as happened in those times, when grandeur and learning frequently met in the same person), if there was an error it must of necessity be a very slight one, and upon a very doubtful accident.
