Example Questions
What is the advantage of low carbon electrode and plate material for welding austenitic stainless steel?
a.Prevent cracking in the heat affected zone
b.The formation of chromium carbides
c.Prevent cracking in the weld metal
d.Prevent distortion
Answer B
Welding stainless steel requires low carbon content for both the base metal and the filler metal to avoid sensitization. This occurs with the formation of chromium carbides in heat affected zones and weld metal, so the free chromium available in the material after sensitization is lower than the protection limit (10.4%Cr) that enables the material to resist corrosion.
Which of the following materials are cut using the traditional oxy-fuel cutting process?
a.Aluminum alloys
b.Stainless steel alloys
c.Carbon and low alloy steel
d.Copper alloys
Answer: C
Only carbon and low alloy steel can be cut with an oxy-fuel cutting process.
Criteria of traditional oxy-fuel cutting processes includes:
The material must have the capability of burning in a stream of oxygen.
The materials ignition temperature must be lower than its melting temperature.
Its heat conductivity should be relatively low. [not applicable for copper or aluminum]
The metal oxide produced must melt at a temperature below the melting point of the metal. [not applicable for aluminum]
The formed slag must be of low viscosity. [not applicable for copper, aluminum and stainless steel].
Practice Makes Perfect
Really! The more questions you see, the more likely you are to pass the test. And between our study guide and practice tests, you'll have over 120 practice questions that cover every category. You can fine-tune your knowledge in areas where you feel comfortable and be more efficient in improving your problem areas.

Maybe you have read this kind of thing before, and maybe feel you don't need it, and you are not sure if you are going to buy this book. Remember though, it only a few percentage points divide the PASS from the FAIL students. Even if our test tips increase your score by a few percentage points, isn't that worth it?
Why not do everything you can to get the best score on the welder test?
