We Slaves of Suriname

We Slaves of Suriname is the first radical analysis of socio-historical formation in the former Dutch colony, now an independent republic. It's author, Anton De Kom, was a Surinamese resistance fighter and later a member of the Dutch resistance and Communist party after German occupation of the Netherlands in 1940. He died in a German concentration camp in 1945. We Slaves of Suriname is a key text of decolonial historical analysis, integrating the experience of Suriname's multiethnic population into the rest of the Caribbean region and adding to the narrative of struggles against slavery, imperialism and racism. First published in Dutch in 1934, and then translated into Russian, German and Spanish, the book now finally sees its English translation at a time when the people of Suriname are still struggling against the vestiges of colonialism.
