Excerpt from Watts Phillips: Artist and Playwright
When the idea was first suggested of a Life of the late Watts Phillips, or rather a narrative of his career as artist, novelist, and dramatist, the notion was regarded with much doubt. Though he held rank among the successful dramatists of his day, his plays had been for so long unacted in London, that it was feared the public might take but little interest in the book.
The splendid revival, however, of "The Dead Heart" by Mr. Henry Irving, proved that Watts Phillips's name was not lost in oblivion - a fact that was pleasantly corroborated by the circumstance that many of those who were present on the first night of its production at the Lyceum had also witnessed the drama's "first night" at the Adelphi under the management of Mr. Benjamin Webster.
