Excerpt from Walks in Rome, Vol. 1 of 2 Hile taking upon himself responsibility, owing to unforeseen circumstances, for many suggestions and modifications in the present edition of these volumes, their Reviser takes this opportunity of stating that their much-lamented author was well advanced in their revision before the present writer was approached upon the sub ject. Mr. Augustus Hare passed suddenly from a most industrious and benevolent life on January 22, 1903. Had he survived to reissue the work, it is sincerely believed that he would have acquiesced in most of the modifications. It is even possible he would have per mitted others, had not the type for portions of the work been already set up. The writer takes this occasion also to thank all those who have been so good as to write to him and the Publishers, offering suggestions of various kinds, of some of which he has taken due advantage.
