The use of any kind of speculum has the same disadvantages. Where the fissure is short, and is rendered accessible by moderate expulsive efforts, the daily application of a four per cent. Solution of cocaine, followed by thorough applica tions of one or the other of these solutions, will generally effect a cure in a week, and the pain will be lessened from the first application.
