Annaleigh and her mother, Lydia, live in a small village---Leanor. Annaleigh and Lydia argue about everything. Annaleigh wants to meet with her best friend, Malachi King, more often, but Lydia hates the Kings. Four immortal women---the Prattle--- rule over Annaleigh's town. To keep the people of Leanor in line, the Prattle hurl deadly violet spiders at them. They also conduct lessons in the Arborituary. One day, the Prattle announces they need a fifth member to join their group. The whole town is faced with a decision to become immortal.
