Verbal Adjectives and Participles in Indo-European Languages / Adjectifs verbaux et participes dans les langues indo-européennes

The present volume contains the proceedings of the conference about »Verbal adjectives and participles in Indo-European languages«, which took place in Paris, in September 2014, as a thematic symposium (»Arbeitstagung«) of the Society for Indo-European Studies (Indogermanische Gesellschaft/Société des Études Indo-Européennes). The aim of the conference was to highlight convergences and divergences in the treatment of verbal adjectives and participles across the Indo-European languages, modern as well as ancient. It is well-known that the border between these two classes may fluctuate in synchrony and diachrony and reveals an intricate interplay of morphology, syntax and semantics.
The book contains 24 contributions which cover a large array of Indo-European languages belonging to different branches (Anatolian, Indo-Iranian, Greek, Latin, Tocharian, Baltic, Slavic, Celtic, Armenian, Germanic), and issues which are all worked out in historical and comparative framework. The papers tackle in their majority the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features of several categories. Several of them deal with the formal reconstruction of specific morphological categories of verbal adjectives and participles in Proto-Indo-European.
