Excerpt from Uriel Acosta: Trauerspiel in Fünf AufzügenThe scene is laid in Tibet, but it contains allusions to contemporary conditions. It was followed the next year by another novel, called Der Sadduza'er 007: Amsterdam, which was dramatized twelve years later under the name Uriel Acosta. In 1835 appeared a series of essays, which Gutzkow called Ofeatltc/re Clzaraktere, and shortly afterwards he published a new edition of Schleiermacher's letters about Friedrich Schlegel's Lacinde, enriched by an introduction which was highly offensive to the clergy of that time. The novel Wally, which Gutzkow wrote in the same year, also contained many passages which his critics consid ered objectionable from a moral as well as a Christian point of view. He was violently attacked by his former friend Wolfgang Menzel, and denounced to the govern ment as a menace to public morals. He was even arrested and for ten weeks kept as a prisoner. Menzel's criticisms had grossly exaggerated the literary liberties of Gutzkow, and there had been no sufficient reason for such a drastic punishment.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
