Excerpt from Uriel Acosta: Trauerspiel in Fünf AufzügenKarl Gutzkow was born on March 17th, 1811, in Berlin. His father was a groom in the household of Prince Wilhelm of Prussia, and his mother the daughter of a mechanic. Her maiden name was Sophia Berg. At Easter, 1821, he entered the F riedrich-werdersche Gym nasium, in Berlin, and soon earned the reputation of being an unusually bright and gifted youth. Eight years later he was admitted to the University of Berlin, where he at first studied theology. But soon he exchanged this study for philosophy. In 1830 he received a gold medal for an essay entitled De (liis fatalibus. In the same year the second French revolution broke out and Karl Gutzkow, like so many other young Germans of his time, became greatly interested in politics.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
