Tropical Radioecology

Angebote / Angebote:

Tropical Radioecology is achieving greater significance given the increasing need for nuclear energy requirements within tropical countries over the coming decades. However, most radioecological studies to date have been carried out in temperate regions of the planet, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere. This book brings together what has been studied in the tropical and sub-tropical areas of the planet and address factors pertaining to tropical environments that form the basis for the perceived differences that may exist in those regions. .. The book looks at past, present, and future source terms for radioactivity in tropical regions. The natural transport and dispersion processes occurring in tropical systems are also described. These cover atmospheric, geophysical and aquatic transport and geochemistry. Following on, interactions of radioactivity with biotic systems are a major focus. This section covers terrestrial systems (predominately soil to plant transfer focusing on crops that are more typical for tropical agrosystems), freshwater systems, and marine radioecology. The book draws out the uniqueness of tropical systems in terms of the biotic features that exist in those regions. The basic rationale for undertaking radioecological studies includes the use of radioactivity as tracers of environmental processes as well as the need to appreciate the impact of radioactivity on humans and other biota. In that context, the book gives examples of studies in which radiotracers have been used to assess biokinetics in tropical biota. The book also draws together the available information to address radiological consequence modeling in tropical systems. Finally, data that are still required to address issues pertaining to tropical radioactivity are identified.
