The factual details of Karlo (Carl) Rothschild's life mirror some of the most momentous events of Jewish life in the 20th century. Born in Hamburg, he escaped, aged eight, with his parents and two older sisters to the United States in 1939. He grew up in New York in a loving family that valued education, religious observance and commitment to community. After receiving his B.S. from CCNY, Carl was awarded a fellowship from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and obtained a PhD in biochemistry. After some years of working in his field, Carl moved with his family to Israel to take up the position of Director of the biochemistry laboratory in the Rebecca Ziv Hospital of Zefat. Karlo and his wife, Frances, live in Haifa.
