Through her ports, Wide open to the Autumn sky, there drifts The shadow of a sound from decks dream-crowded. The breath of sleeping boys. Gently they rest The hurrying tide of wakefulness has turned At length, and, ebbing, drawn by slow degrees Back to its far abode, and laid them down Upon the sands of sleep. And, in its stead, Dream-pools, with radiant treasure filled, engage The unwearied thoughts in manifold delights Until the tide, flooding at morn, sweeps back Swift, and submerges all. But now they lie Dreaming, as others dreamt not long ago Those others, who, returning from their games, Met at a corner the cold stare of War, Stopped short, and then, half-curious, half-afraid, Gazed for a moment right into his eyes, And saw and whom we shall not see again. Or shall we? No, the Earth's slow pulse of birth And growth and death maintains its soundless rhythm, And all our tremulous questionings fall back Unanswered to the ground. We shall no more Look upon them, save in that sightless seeing which dreams purvey, or for an instant caught Like a mirage within the laughing glance Of one of those who follow where they trod, Who follow, and forget.
