*Author is an award-winning writer in Japan, and has been nominated for and received numerous accolades including the 2015 Waseda University Tsubouchi Shōyō Prize, the 2019 Taneda Santōka Prize, the 2020 Cikada Prize and the 2021 Kumanichi Literary Prize. She currently teaches poetry at Waseda University in Tokyo. *Author is a well known Japanese poet with an existing US audience. Readers who know her work via translation are familiar with a more formally poetic and abrasive style. Ito currently lives in Kumamoto and travels often, between Kumamoto and Tokyo, between Japan and Europe, as well as the US. This work shows a different side of her career, engaging in sensory impressions of each place she travels through and the relationships between images, language and ideas that build in real time in the journey across borders and of the text. *Essays were initially serialized in Iwanami Shoten’s Tosho (a periodical written by and for intellectuals). As such, author spent a lot of time researching Latin and the APG system of categorization as a means of new philosophy and phenomenology, navigating between these different modes of naming and knowing plant life, and finding the poetic possibilities therein.
