Treasure Trove

Angebote / Angebote:

Excerpt from Treasure Trove: Or He Would Be a Gentleman The novel is one clearly written in a hurry, and in a haphazard manner without deep conviction. The result is a jumble of names, illustrious and otherwise, of half-finished, ineffective portraits. There are too many regrettable blemishes in the book, and strict justice requires that they should be adverted to. It is unnecessarily coarse and vulgar in parts the vulgarity being the more noticeable than in certain chapters of Handy Andy and Rory o'more from the fact that there is a general lack of racy humour to carry it off. No thing could be more vulgar than the eighth chapter, and the scene is, in addition, absurd and ill-written. It is a pity that Lover allowed so bad an example of his hasty work to pass without revision. Lover's sentimental heroes, as has been pointed out in previous introductions, are not particularly interesting. The central figures of his two earlier stories are richly comic, but in this book the story revolves around Ned Corkery, who, though not quite absurd, is decidedly stagey. All the author's asides notwithstanding, many of his actions are weak and he rants not a little. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
