Excerpt from Through Night to LightThus, over a draught of brisk ale, were different opinions broached respecting a London citizen, in one of the numerous taverns which surrounded his house. It was about the year 1713, rather before than after, and at the time when, in a brilliant apart ment of the castle in Hanover, the German Elector, George Louis, was making immediate preparations for embarking, at one of his small harbours, in the North Sea, to take possession of the sceptre of Great Britain, already almost as powerful as the trident of Neptune. This sceptre at present rested in the hands of a woman whose life was ebbing away, his near relation, Queen Anne. The White Flying Horse, the cognizance of the House of Guelph, was also the sign of the house inhabited by the man upon whom these different judgments were passed. With him it took its origin from the horse-market, which in old times was held at the upper part of Lincoln's Inn Fields.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
