Excerpt from The Wyoming Valley: Upper Waters of the Susquehanna, and the Lackawanna Coal-Region, Including Views of the Natural Scenery of Northern Pennsylvania, From the Indian Occupancy to the Year 1875The chapters forming this volume were published in parts, and designed to cover the region embraced in the title from the Indian occupancy to the year 1875. The only merit it seeks to claim is that of a photographic view of the territory, the pioneer history in the perspective, - the grand industries, mammoth enterprises, and natural beauties in the foreground. It was the province of the pen merely to accompany the camera, serving to elaborate where obstacles cutoff the view, and to retouch incomplete points. The task has been an arduous one, and like Goethe's star without haste, but without rest, it has accomplished its mission, little deserving the profuse kindnesses which it has received from the local press. These favors came at an hour when they were peculiarly welcome.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
