Excerpt from The Wisconsin Archeologist, Vol. 3: Stone Pestles and MortarsThe New York pestles are largely Algonkian, a few are said to have been found on Iroquois sites. Of the large stone pestles some are known to have been used in wooden mortars. The writer was not impressed with the stone mortars found in New York collections: Their number was small and they were but crude affairs.In the' American Museum of Natural History, New York, there were on exhibition a series of large stone pestles from Pennsylvania. These were similar in form to those found in New York. None were, however, of as large a size, as the larger specimens seen at Albany. There were here also some large stone-pestles from Maine.
