The Wire Donkey is a coming-of-age novel that introduces us to twenty-year-old Ocean Gebthart of Portland, Oregon. He has no girl friend, no car, and his job stacking produce is in question. The son of hippie parents, and originally from Eugene, Ocean is an incurable idealist. He will watch his good works project--Oregon Organ Donors League--blow up. He has no choice but to leave town. He does so in the company of a wise, older woman.
