Excerpt from The Winchell Genealogy: The Ancestry and Children of Those Born to the Winchell Name in America Since 1635The first edition of this work was published in 1869 by Professor Alexander Winchell of the University of Michigan. After its publication the author continued to collect genealogical information more or less actively throughout his life time. When he died in 1891, all his genealogical papers and documents were sent to his brother, N. H. Winchell, state geologist of Minnesota, who volunteered to continue the work. In 1896 the latte-r made plans to undertake the work more actively and in the following year, with the writer's assistance, he sent out thousands of copies of, a printed circular letter, and many personal letters, Obtaining a large amount of new information. In 1898 the work was interrupted by his absence in Europe, and pressure of other duties together with a Serious illness prevented its re. Sumption until about the year 1909. The next year a new cir cular letter was prepared and sent to all the Winchells (and their descendants) whose addresses could be obtained. At this time he was assisted by his daughter, Mrs. I. W.
