Venire, With and Introduction, Dissertation Submitted to the Board of University Studies of the Johns Hopkins University in Conformity With the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, 1900 However, the consideration of the state of things regarding the uses referred to has led me also to consider the question of what are the processes by which these various uses have been produced, and to the framing of certain hypotheses. These hypotheses, I wish to say clearly, are beyond the possibility of demonstration, and I therefore make no attempt to prove them. Nevertheless considering that the value of an hypothesis does not depend entirely on the possibility of proving it, I have made bold to present these of mine, and to explain the reasons which have led me to them. These reasons are the result of the nature and meaning which I attribute to the uses discussed, which to lay bare by means of examples is the chief purpose of this monograph.
