Because of its peculiar nature, The Tragedy of Tragedies, more than any other plays to which Fielding devoted the first ten years of his career, affords evidence in refutation of the old and commonly accepted theory that Fielding.'s youth was woefully misspent in an uninterrupted sowing of wild oats, and that his plays were dashed off over night on stray tobacco wrappers.
