Despite excelling at English, he pursued his interest in the effect of drugs on human tissue, which lead him to read pharmacology as part of a pharmacy degree. During his time at college he took a year out as President of the Student Union, an experience of influencing events, which guided him towards a commercial career rather than research or academia. It also resulted in him meeting his lifetime partner and wife Jacky. A career in medical communications followed working for the American agency Omnicom BBDO. This international role enabled him to indulge his remote country passion on all parts of the globe.Garth was involved with words from a young age, writing stories in exercise books as a teenager, working for the student newspaper and subsequently producing articles in The Pharmaceutical Journal. He finally combined his enjoyment of wordsmithing and love for open country in his first book The Tissue Trail - an absorbing thriller which one professional critic described as "flowing with tension and intrigue…a complex but well thought out thriller with a strong sense of authenticity.
