It is offered as a practical aid to the acquisition of a thorough knowledge of the Tagalog language. The method of instruction followed throughout this work is in accordance with the system which seems to be easiest for learners, whatever their age, to grasp a new language, namely, that of explaining its grammatical construct ion, as far as possible, in the same phraseology and on the same lines as they have been accustomed to in learning their own and other languages. It was at first intended to avoid any unnecessary philological investigations or scientific theories of the language as being beyond the scope of a practical Grammar, but when such language as the Tagalog, so dissimilar in construction to those of the western world, is to be considered, some scientifical remarks showing its peculiar character can hardly be dispensed with. This has been done, to some extent, in the "Introduction" and occasionally in the text, mainly in the explanatory notes generally preceding every lesson and part of speech.
