Excerpt from The Spirit of 1861 As there were three companies from Madison in the Sixth Indiana in the Three Months' Campaign, and having en listed there myself, in giving a brief history of the Sixth Regiment and that campaign I will make Madison a starting point, and refer more particularly to the companies from that city, being more familiar with them, though every old soldier and citizen will, I hope, find much to interest them in the pages of this little work. The Sixth was really the First Indiana Infantry Regi~ ment. In the war with Mexico the State furnished five regiments, and the powers that be thought proper to com mence in the late war to number our regiments where we ended in the Mexican war, and therefore the First Regiment was called the Sixth.
