Excerpt from The Scientific Monthly, Vol. 14: January-June, 1922 One of the best illustrations of a successful plant breeding enter prise from the standpoint of practical results obtained was the potato varieties produced by E. S. Carman, late editor of the Rural New Yorker. Rural Blush, Rural New Yorker No. 2, Carman No. 1. Car man No. 3 and Sir Walter Raleigh are varieties which came from a collection of 62 varieties which were gotten together for the purpose of crossing. Artificial pollination proved to be impossible on account of failure to find good pollen but from seed bolls naturally formed (undoubtedly many of the seeds resulted from crossing between differ ent varieties) a large number of seedlings were raised and from these the five best were distributed after careful testing. It is stated that at one time 80 per cent. Of the potatoes grown in this country were either Carman's productions or seedlings from them. He accomplished what he set out to do in producing a better potato than the old Early Rose and Peach Blow.
