The chances of success in this contest, were natu rally with the poets. The innovating spirit of the Puritans rendered them very unacceptable to the Queen, and the manner in which they put forward their demands, was not at all calculated to ensure their success. Camden thus describes the Insolency of the Puritans, in the year 1588, in which year, he tells us, that England was pestered with schism.
