Excerpt from The Saloon Question in ChicagoThe purpose of this essay is to describe the present aspects of the retail liquor business in Chicago, rather than to give a historical sketch of its development. The study of the question has been difficult, owing to a lack of printed matter. Most of the information has been gained from personal investigation of places described, and by interviews with those interested in the liquor business. This information was given with the tacit understanding that names were not to be quoted. Whenever such authorities are used, they are indicated as confidential, either in the text or by a foot-note.I take this opportunity to express in public my thanks to Dr. John H. Gray, of the Department of Political Economy of Northwestern University, for his constant assistance and helpful suggestions.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
