The other end of the Pyrenees on the Bay of Biscay suggested cold winds and gilded casinos and golf: whereas away where the mountain wall peters out into the Mediterranean the little fishing towns and villages had unfamiliar names, vision names such as Port Vendres and over into Spain, Rosas, on the Bay of Rosas, names with the sun in them. One guessed at crumbling walls round the towns, at look-out towers and castles on the hills. It was clearly a country left to itself, where a rhythmic tenor of life would carry on from century to century, and the people and the land suffice for each other.
