Excerpt from The Right Flank at Gettysburg: An Account of the Operations of General Gregg's Cavalry Command, Showing Their Important Bearing Upon the Results of the Battle
Even among cavalry officers a want of appreciation has been shown. General Pleasanton, who, though nominally commanding the Cavalry Corps at the time, was not with any of his divisions, but, according to his own account, near Gen eral Meade in the rear of the infantry line of battle, instruct ing his distinguished chief how in half an hour to show him self a great general, has recently written an article giving an outline of the valuable services of the cavalry of the Army of the Potomac preceding the battle. He omits entirely to men tion the important part it took in the battle itself. Though concluding in a general way with a glowing tribute to its ser vices, it is difficult to ascertain from what he writes whether any portion of the corps of which he was the commander was actually engaged.
