An accurate interpretation of every word and phrase of the book along historical lines is impossible in the present state of our knowledge, 'but enough is known to enable us to understand it in a general way, and this general knowledge is of very great practical value.For the reader's convenience, and because careful study show ed both the Authorized Version of 1611 and the Revised Ver sion. Of 1885 to be defective, it was found necessary to include a fresh translation of the book in this volume. A translation, as literal as possible, into clear, simple, modern English has been the aim. Although in many ways the book is a difficult one for the translator it is hoped some success has been obtained. The translation is inserted as Appendix I.
