It is said that the name Protes tant has survived as embodying for many the conception Of liberty, the right Of private judg ment, of toleration Of every progressive idea in religion, as opposed to the Roman Catholic prin ciples Of authority and tradition. Whether this is a true description Of modern Protestantism or not, it certainly is not a true description of the Protestantism Of the Reformation period.
