Excerpt from The Register Of The Priory Of St. BeesT the date when the priory of St. Bees was founded the district in which it is situated was well organ ised according to Norman ideas in the ecclesiastical as well as in the civil sphere. The whole of the western portion of the modern county of Cumberland from the Wampool not far from Carlisle to the Duddon on the ex treme south - west was composed of two great fiefs, the barony of Allerdale on the north of the Derwent in poss ession of Waldeve son of Earl Gospatfic, and the barony of Coupland, sometimes called the barony of Egremont from the name of the baronia] seat, on the south of the Derwent in possession of William Meschin, both fiefs being held by grant of Henry I.
