Excerpt from The Register of Hanham and Oldland, Gloucestershire, 1584-1681In order to complete the earlier portion of the Registers of Bitton it is necessary to include the Chapelries of Hanham and Oldland, which lie within that parish.A transcript of the first volume was made some years ago by P. Carlyon-Britton, Esq., and recently, with the approval of Canon Ellacombe, Vicar of Bitton, it was placed in the hands of the Parish Register Society for the purpose of being printed.In order to insure as correct a copy as is possible under the circumstances, and to enable many entries to be deciphered which were much faded and worn by the constant turning over of the pages, the Register of the two Chapelries was called over word for word, and it is believed that all the entries capable of being restored have been inserted in the printed volume now issued. As will be seen, however, there are many entries completely lost by the leaves having been torn away.The Register begins in 1584 and runs continuously to 1696. Towards the end of the volume the years have got somewhat mixed up, but it is generally pretty clear what year is intended.The whole is written on 96 pages of parchment and 6 pages of paper.
