Excerpt from The Rate of the Reaction Between Iodic and Hydriodic Acids
Each measurement contained in the following tables 'ia volved the preparation of a new reacting mixture, as follows: Into the test-tube was first pipetted air-free water in quantity sufficient (together with that of the reagents subsequently added) to make up the total volume to 100 cc, measured quantities of sodium acetate, acetic acid and potassium iodide solutions were then added. The potassium iodate was measured into the beaker and the stirrer set in motion, the contents of the test tube were then thrown in, and at the same instant the catch of a stop-watch was released by means of a pedal. Experiments with colored solutions showed that a homogeneous mixture was attained in from one-fifth to one-half second. When it was de sired to interrupt the reaction, the contents of the beaker were again stirred rapidly, about to cc of ammonium bicarbonate solution thrown in from a test-tube and the watch stopped. The iodine liberated was then determined with centinormal sodium arsenite and iodine solutions, using starch as an indicator.' Duplicate experiments gave results agreeing within cc of the volumetric arsenite solution, while duplicate analyses of the same mixture agreed within cc.
