The Pushkin Project

The Pushkin Project tells the story of how a college professor changes course in late career, reeducates himself in evolutionary thought, partners with inner-city high schools, and founds a summer institute to implement a new set of learning strategies. These strategies involve deploying current ideas about cultural evolution as starting point ("mind" in nature, including human nature, begins in biology) and then using those ideas in an extended experiment in "cognitive cross-training." The students are introduced simultaneously to 1) a culture (Russian) that is not theirs but which they adopt, 2) a language (Russian) that is not theirs but which they learn to communicate in, 3) a cultural hero (Pushkin) who is not theirs but with whose African heritage they readily identify. The results, as students testify, are "mind-blowing."
