Excerpt from The Public Ledger Building, Philadelphia: With an Account of the Proceedings Connected With Its Opening June 20, 1867Ment remained until June, 1867. Prior to that date, how ever, two of the principal Government Offices had been removed a few hundred yards westward, and some of the heavy business of the city had taken the same direction, and the commodious building that was thought to be equal to any exigency that might ever arise in the history of the paper was found to be altogether in sufficient for the uses of the public ledger. For several years past the greatly expanded business of the establish ment has demanded additional room, and the rapid execu tion of its daily work has been somewhat retarded 011 that account. This was clear to the present proprietor when he purchased the public ledger from its founders, and even at the time when negotiations were going 011 for purchasing the newspaper, Mr. Childs saw that it would be necessary to change its quarters at the earliest possible opportunity. He accordingly fixed in his mind the south west corner of Sixth and Chestnut Streets as a suitable locality for the New Publication Office, and immediately upon the purchase of the paper commenced the prelimi naries for obtaining the large lot of ground upon that corner. The purchase of the several lots Of ground that now form the site of the new ledger building, and the erection of that spacious edifice itself, are therefore but the carrying out of a resolve that was made at the same time the paper was purchased.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
