Excerpt from The Poets and Poetry of America: A Satire by Lavante, Published in PhiladelphiaThe satire is written in heroic couplets in¿ie man ner of Dryden, Pope, and their imitators. It is fairly well printed, in mere pamphlet form, small cc tavo, or rzmo, and the poem of about 950 lines fills 33 pages. The title-page (which we reproduce almost in t'ac-simile) contains no name of author, but the foot of the poem has the signature Levante. It seems to have been a cheap production, five or ten cents at most. The appearance of the thing is altogether against its being a work of merit.
