Excerpt from The Officium And Miracula Of Richard Rolle Of HampoleIt may be added as further evidence of the informality of his method of entering on thee of a hermit that there is no sign of his ever having been set apart solemnly to this life by a Bishop, as was usual. He is heard of soon after this in a certain church, the name of which is not specified, on the Vigil of the Feast of the Assumption. Here he was found in the pew (loco ubi consueuit orare) of the lady of the manor when she came to vespers. Her servants wished to turn him out, but struck by his devout bearing she bade them leave him undisturbed. He was, however, recognised by her sons, who were Oxford students, as the son of William Rolle, whom they knew at Oxford. The next day the Feast of the Assumption, without a'sking anyone's leave he put on a surplice and assisted at Mattins and Mass, and after the Gospel at Mass he sought the priest 's benediction and entering the pulpit preached a sermon which moved the congregation to tears.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
