Excerpt from The Occurrence of Oil and Gas in MichiganIn 1860, A. Winchell, published in the First Biennial Report of the Geological Survey of Michigan a number of records Of deep borings and referred to the possibilities for the occurrence Of Oil in the eastern part Of the State, especially in the vicinity Of Port Huron. Further records Of borings were given in Volume III by Dr. C. Rominger in a report on the geology Of the Lower Peninsula Of Michigan. In Volume V, Dr. A. C. Lane published a large number of well sections with special reference to the occurrence Of Oil and gas. The introduction, written by Dr. L. L. Hubbard, is a brief discussion Of the origin Of salt, gypsum, and petroleum. Brief Chapters on Oil and gas together with the records of many borings were published by Lane in the Annual Reports for 1901, 1903, 1904, and 1908.
