Excerpt from The New England Magazine, Vol. 10: An Illustrated Monthly, March 1894-August 1894England into New England within a few years without any meaning belonging to it, does not appear in these records at all. It is not, indeed, in the English Prayer Book, nor in any English Bible. These men were ministers. A body of wealthy and conscientious and religious merchants sent them out to be ministers to the new colony. What powers should they assume when they came? What status should they take? Dr. Bacon very happily says that they were chaplains appointed to a trading community by the men who furnished the other supplies for that community. Now it would be quite in their power, landing as they did with the emigrants who had gone with them in three ships, meeting as they did the fishermen and lumbermen and others who had gone out with Endicott nearly a year before, to say, We have been sent over here by the Company to take care of your manners and religion. We have their appoint ment as chaplains to this post. There have been no lack of instances where such men have acted _under such commis sions, nay, where they act under such commissions now. The chaplain of every prison acts under such a commission.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
