Dr. Bacon very happily says that they were chaplains appointed to a trading community by the men who furnished the other supplies for that community.Now it would be quite in their power, landing as they did with the emigrants who had gone with them in three ships, meeting as they did the fishermen and lumbermen and others who had gone out with Endicott nearly a year before, to say, We have been sent over here by the Company to take care of your manners and religion. We have their appoint ment as chaplains to this post. There have been no lack of instances where such men have acted _under such commis sions, nay, where they act under such commissions now.
