Excerpt from The Mount Holyoke, Vol. 12: June, 1902-May, 1903Thanatopsis was probably written in the doctor's study, which was in one of the wings of the Old house. At the time when the place was remodeled this wing was removed bodily to a spot in the valley some distance west of the village, where it stands today, unpainted and gray, beneath its awkward gambrel roof. It is scarcely a romantic Object, for it is occupied by an Old negro, who mends his broken windowpanes with Old newspapers and brilliantly colored articles of wearing apparel, and fills his front yard with a varied collection Of broken vehicles.The library of the present house contains many of Bryant's books although by far the larger portion were given to the town library which he built. But the Whole lower ¿oor has been left much as it was when Bryant spent his summers here. All the rooms are furnished with fine old furniture and on walls and mantels are photographs and portraits Of men and women long dead, and children now grown to middle age. Oddly enough among all this mahogany and walnut stands the old yellow pine cradle, low and hooded, in which all of the Bryant babies were jogged to Sleep.
