Neither expedition succeeded in reaching the pole. The year has been an unfavorable one, not only for the explorers, but also for the Whalers, on account of the unusual quantity of ice driven toward Greenland by strong easterly winds. But, though failing of the main object, both expeditions succeeded in reach ing high latitudes, and valuable experience has been gained.
