If the results of this investigation point to conclusions that have not hitherto pre vailed, I believe it will be found that they are just, and I have confidence that English fairness will ensure their recognition. I think it must be acknowledged that much English writing on this architecture has been too uncritical, and that without a properly critical spirit it is impossible to form a just estimate of any art.
