With regard to the method of this study, though I have Often cited encyclopedias and certain reference manuals in order to save space in suggesting bibliography, yet I have always tried to cite original authorities in dealing with any disputed or disputable point. Mediaeval surnames are usually printed according to the modern form of the place name, save in cases where a particular form Of spelling has already become widely accepted.
