Excerpt from The Locomotive Engineers' Monthly Journal, 1871, Vol. 5 Legislation is open to us, in both the National and State Governments, and from an obscure body of men, the Order is recognized as one of vital im portance to the growth and prosperity of the country. Words of encourage ment are given us by some of the best man in the land, and with a strict adhe rance to our rules as laid down. We may safely assume that success is ours. Many reforms have been efiected in the Engineers of the counh'y, and the tendency is upward in morals, and on ward ia professional ability. From the man who drank liquor to excess, we can safely say, that, although too much indulgence is still given to whisky drinking, much improvement has been made, and we hope are long the habit may be eradicated entirely from the Order. It does not require a man of large ideas to realize the fact that whisky drinking is the cause of nearly every failure, either of individ uals or organizations. Perhaps there are but few men engaged on our rail roads, as engineers, but what has at some time drank more or less whisky.
