Excerpt from The Life of Lope De Vega: 152-1635 During the many years that I have been reading Lope's miscellaneous productions - by which I mean his non dramatic works, - and his comedias (of which I possess an almost complete collection), it has often occurred to me that I might summarize the chief events in the romantic career of the great poet who had for so long been my favourite author. On the appearance of the Proee:o I began to revise the notes I had made in the course of m reading, and determined to print them in the present orm. The idea of discussing Lope's works, especially his most important plays, had to be abandoned, as it would have made the book too bulky, or rather would have furnished material enough for several volumes.
