Excerpt from The Life and Guest of S. Thomas Cantilvpe: Bishop of Hereford, and Some Time Before L. Chancellor of England
The author of the Life and Gests of St. Thomas of Hereford, - which is here reprinted without any alteration, except what is involved in the adoption of the modern orthography of English words - was Father Richard Strange, S.J., a Northumbrian, born in 1611. He entered the Society in 1631, taught at the Jesuit College at St. Omer, served on the English Mission, was Rector of a house at Ghent, and in 1674 was made Provincial. His name is very prominent in Dr. Oates' 'true and exact narrative.' After some marvellous escapes from pursuivants related in Father Hamerton's personal narrative, he died at the age of seventy-one at St. Omer. This is a reprint of his book, which is extremely scarce, and yet the only English Life of St. Thomas Cantilupe. Some few verbal changes have been made to make the meaning clearer. As the Life is full of unction but somewhat meagre in fact, a supplement has been added with additional particulars.
