He spent his early life on his father's farm, beginning his education in the public school near his home. At the age of twelve years he went to Mahanoy City where he accepted a position as clerk in a grocery store. Which position he held for two years. Returning home and desiring to prepare him self for greater usefulness in life he attended the Limestoneville Academy, Northumberland Conny during the summer months.
